What to Consider When Getting an Online Teaching Job

Are you thinking of getting an online tutoring or teaching job? Well, many people are now turning to the internet to get a degree, to get help with their current studies, or simply to learn some new skill. And with the boom of online teaching, you might as well take advantage of it—that is, of course, if you want to teach and got something to teach.

Unfortunately, desire for teaching and being knowledgeable in a certain field of study aren’t enough to land you a teaching job online. Somehow, online learning centers have put up standards to maintain their credibility as well as the quality of education they offer.

Almost all online learning institutions require applicants to have at least a bachelor’s degree. Of course, depending on the education level that you will teach, they may require you to have a post-graduate degree; you must have finished a masters or doctorate degree.

In language teaching, however, you may not be required to have a degree. As long as you are proficient in the language you’ll be teaching, you may get hired. You’ll get bigger chances of landing the job, though, if you are a native speaker, have prior language teaching experience, and/ or have passed language proficiency certification programs (which are sometimes required).

Now, if you fill in the educational background requirements, proceed to the other not-so-hard-to-meet-but-equally-important requirements. Firstly, do you have a stable net connection and a reliable computer? Many online tutoring are done real time through voice chat. If you have a lousy internet provider, you better change it. You wouldn’t want to start your three-hour teaching session with how to divide fractions only to end it still discussing the same thing, just because you and your student couldn’t hear each other because your net connection keeps on lagging.

Taking on the job when you know your net connection or computer isn’t dependable is simply unprofessional. Everyone has a right to commit mistakes or to have emergencies that sometimes prevent one from delivering their job properly. However, knowing beforehand that you’ll be having many of those preventable glitches is a different matter.

After the technical stuff and educational requirements comes your working environment. Chances are you’ll be teaching from your home—the usual setting of most online jobs. Now, working at home does have its benefits. You wouldn’t have to be caught in traffic jams to “meet” your student. You can easily grab a bite in the kitchen if you get hungry. And you don’t have to really dress up for your session. However, the question is: Is your home conducive for online teaching sessions?

If you have kids at home running around and creating all sorts of noise all the time, then you should know that it’s no way a good condition to teach in. Even if you’re good at tuning out such disturbances while at work, you can’t always get a student who can do the same. Unless the tutoring job involves only correcting and answering assignments via email exchange or IM chat, you better find yourself a room in your house which you can keep to yourself during sessions.

How to Discover Your Online Niche

Having a niche is the key to building an online business that succeeds. A niche, when thoroughly researched and prepared for, is the key to not only great website traffic and a top search engine result, it’s also the key to profits. Therefore, the first step when considering any online business is to discover your online niche. Here are a few tips to get you started.

#1 Make a list of topics you’re interested and/or passionate about. Assuming your online business is a rousing success, you’re going to be writing, speaking, and planning your business almost every day of the year. It really helps if you enjoy what you’re working on.

#2 Once you have a list of topics you’re interested in and/or passionate about, it’s time to see if there is any demand for that topic. It’s time to do a bit of keyword research. Keyword research involves using a few keyword sites like the Google AdWords tool and Wordtracker to accomplish two key things:

You want to see if there is a lot of demand for your topic(s) and you want to see if there is a lot of supply for your chosen topic(s). What you’re looking for are topics with high demand and low supply. Meaning lots of people are looking for your information and very few websites are providing it. Now if you find that absolutely no one is providing any information on your topic then you’ll want to investigate why. It may mean that it isn’t a viable topic.

Each keyword tool operates a little differently but you’ll see numbers that represent the number of people searching for that topic or keyword and the number of sites or pages that are optimized for that keyword. So if you see that 1000 people are searching gingerbread cookies each day and there are only 20 pages that are optimized for that keyword, it may be time to dig deeper.

#3 Research your competition. Using those same keyword tools and a few keyword tools that help you dig deeper into the keywords your competition is using to market and optimize their site, you will spend some time visiting potential competitors to explore what their niche focus is.

For example, you may visit those website pages optimized for gingerbread cookies and find that only five of them are cookie recipe sites. The others may be parenting sites or just random blog posts. So, you now know that you really only have five competitors and can position yourself amongst them by perhaps narrowing your niche even further.

You could, for example, choose to have a website devoted entirely to cookie cutter cookies rather than all cookies, assuming there is high demand and low supply for that topic.

#4 Finally, analyze your topics based on profitability – which topics have the potential to make the most money. For example, a website based on cookie cutter cookies may be great fun for you but are there many moneymaking opportunities? A website based on a high-end luxury product, like Italian Espresso Makers, may have more income opportunities.

Choosing your online niche is a process. It can take a little while to find a topic that meets all of the criteria we mentioned however, it is time well spent. A well-researched niche topic can help you achieve all of your online entrepreneur dreams.

Step One – Hone Your Skills. A blog content manager is responsible for a wide variety of tasks. You’ll want to make sure your writing skills are not only up to par but finely tuned. It’s important to be able to write confidently on a variety of topics and to be able to match the voice of any particular writer. It’s also important to understand various writing formats. One blog may use a very journalistic style while another blog may use a more personal, story telling or feature style of writing.

In addition to honing your writing skills, you’ll want to hone your organizational skills, understand group and social dynamics, and also ensure you’re comfortable delegating and managing in the event that you’re working with others to build a blog community. You’ll also, of course, want to have a solid understanding of blogging technology and even some basic HTML.

Step Two – Establish your own online presence. The best way to demonstrate your skills is to create your own blog. This will serve as your writing portfolio so to speak as well as demonstrate your understanding of blog community building, internet marketing, and technology.

Step Three – Become involved in online communities. Again, this is a great way to demonstrate your skills but also, becoming actively involved online may lead you to your dream job. One of the best ways to find a great job is to connect with potential employers online – not as a job seeker but as a peer. Be professional and put your best foot forward at all times.

Step Four – Join blog manager groups online or community manager groups online. At first, you may want to simply view what they have to say for a while and learn. After you feel comfortable, you can begin participating. This is a great way to both learn about the industry and to make connections. Additionally, if you have a passion for a specific industry or topic, participate with blogs in that industry. Comment, and become active and then when you’re ready, take that extra step and contact the blog owner.

Sometimes, just getting your name out there with the right people can lead to your dream job. If you’ve made a positive impression, they’ll be happy to share your name with others in the industry. Becoming a blog content manager is a great way to add value to the world and to live an ideal lifestyle, often you can work from home and if you love interacting with others, it doesn’t get much better.
